About

Our Society

Who are the Wayfarers?

Wayfarers is the University of Birmingham's society for all those who love hiking, mountaineering, and the outdoors. Our members come from all reaches of the University, from first year undergraduates to final year PhD students, with plenty of mature and international students, which means there is always a great mix of people at our events, with plenty to talk about.

The Society has a rich history in getting students out of Birmingham and off the beaten track. While the University has changed greatly in the past several decades, the hills and fields (and pubs!) of Britain are largely the same as when the first Wayfarers stepped off the tram for a ramble around the Clent Hills in 1933.

Membership costs just £12 per year, which allows you to sign up for our day walks, weekend trips and socials! Walks happen most weekends in term time, and come in two main varieties: day trips by trains to local beauty spots or weekend trips by minibus to national parks around the country.

We also plan plenty of socials, with a good mix of sober socials and trips to the pub, whatever your preference might be. Some highlights include trips to The Glee Club for live comedy, Ghetto Golf and pub quizzes!
